In high school I shadowed and taught an art class at a local elementary school. My time spent at the elementary school escalated to being allowed to teach the class on my own, and just from this I learned a lot. More recently, I have had the valuable opportunity of teaching high school and middle school students with lessons I planned and executed on my own. This opened my eyes to the differences in age groups and even the differences in individual student learning. Additionally, I have become well versed in management techniques and procedures to keep the classroom environment smooth, agreeable and exciting. My past experiences alone, I feel, have become a great strength towards the success of my student teaching experience. From these experiences I have gained the confidence I need to take control of a classroom but I still have the openness necessary to continue learning from my supervising teacher and from my students. I am very determined to be the best I can be at my job so I will always have a want for criticism (good or bad) in order to help me along my path. Another strength I possess, that will help me thrive as a student teacher, is my level-headedness and ability to adapt to unexpected situations with ease. From past challenges teaching of on my own I understand that things almost never go as planned, so preparation is the only way to be ready for such instances. Additionally, I recognize that every student I encounter will be an individual with different needs and talents. Furthermore, getting to know ones students is the most valuable information I can possess and by knowing my students as individuals I will have an easier time managing the flow of the classroom. I also am aware that my supervising teacher will be the best person to help me learn techniques on how to get to know each student. Overall, I feel my knowledge and my determination to become a successful teacher are two qualities that will keep me on the path to success in student teaching.
